Search Question

Does anyone know how put a searchable database on a site? I'd like to know how to allow users to search a site. I'm looking to learn how to do something similiar to what's on this site (search button at the top menu bar). Any tips/info. appreciated.

well there are a few ways you can do it.

you can make one with cgi, php (like this one) or use an outside source (yahoo).

pretty much with cgi & php you need to know what the score is, or you won't be able to set it up correctly - unless you have a friend who knows whats going on.

if you're only starting out - i would use an outisde source like yahoo that will let you put a search form on your site, but when the user submits their entry it will take them to yahoo (but only show your pages - this means you will have to submit all your pages to yahoo).

i really dunno what else i can tell you - but if you don't know what you're doing with those languages then chances are it won't be set up very well.

I dunno how *good* they are, but head over to www.hotscripts.com and check out the PHP section as well as the CGI section and look under search engines or something of the like. Most are premade and may be able to help you start one up, as long as you know how to CHMOD and such, you will be find with CGI (PHP requires it sometimes, not always).

Check there and see if that helps you out.
