Billy, have you ever used Trillian? If so, how do you think Pidgin compares to that? I'm happy with Trillian (the free basic version) but might try out Pidgin to see if it's any better.

Trillian is nice - its a little bulky, but when I was a Windows user thats what I used.

Once I made the permanent switch to Linux I started using Kopete, because it was very similar to Trillian. However, I have grown into a minimalist, so Kopete became too bulky for me. So, I switched over to Gaim. I've been using Gaim for year snow, but just recently they changed their name to Pidgin. When they made the name change, they made a few changes to their program as well, and so far I am loving it. It's lightweight, fast, secure, and looks nice too.

I'm not sure if Pidgin is available to Windows users or not (probably so, since you are asking me about it), but if not I would recommend looking into Miranda IM. Its an extremely lightweight messenger that supports a good majority of the messenger protocols. Pidgin is much nicer than Miranda though, so if you can, go Pidgin.

Also, another good messenger program is CenterICQ. It supports the major protocols (AIM, MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, Jabber) but what makes this program so unique is that it can run in a Linux terminal - go graphical interface is needed.

I have CenterICQ installed on my servers in case my desktop ever goes down, I can just fire it up and never miss a beat of whats going on
